The Divergent Series: Allegiant
After overthrowing the authoritarian rule of Chicago, genetically pure Tris (Shailene Woodley) is invited to leave the walls of the city and meet the rest of humanity; but, new leader, Evelyn (Naomi Watts), doesn’t agree with the idea and efforts to hold all residents within the city. Not to be phased, Tris, Four (Theo James), Peter (Miles Teller), and Caleb (Ansel Algort) make a break for it and find themselves at O’Hare airport, an outpost of humanity. At this outpost Tris meets, David (Jeff Daniels), the director and lead scientist of the Chicago “experiment,” bit by bit questions about humanity’s future are revealed, but more importantly, the future of Chicago is also revealed. Overthrowing bigger authoritarian rule and stopping David is the name of the game. Will Tris and company be able to save free will and free thought or is it already too late?
Formulaic, predictable, poorly scripted with moronic dialogue and even less interesting characters begins to sum up the latest installment of the Divergent Series. This part 1 of 2 final chapters is a clear over-reach by Hollywood to capitalize on the success of other teen franchises and done in such a paint by numbers approach, the end result is laughable, in a bad way. Couple in half baked CGI along with one the longest Dukes of Hazard airborne auto flybys in cinema and you’ll still just be grazing the surface of this monster. The one shining star in all of this, Miles Teller, ironic considering his previous antics and unlikable nature, so there’s that. Skip it. The Divergent Series: Allegiant is rated PG-13.
