The Trip to Spain

Actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon set out on another epic road trip, this time through Spain whilst promoting one of Steve’s new films, surveying local cuisine, and gathering material for their respective writings. Meanwhile, under the surface friendly tensions are at play as certain ego’s need to be fed; comedic relief saves the day along with impressions as well, but what exactly is eating at Steve? Directed by Michael Winterbottom, this loosely plotted hangout session serves nicely as a platform to spend more time with Coogan and Brydon, witnessing their friendship and their improv genius. Although, for those who’ve seen the previous two installments of the road trip series there’s little new impression material mined, and the culinary art on display appears to take a bit of a back seat in favor of plot development; regardless, the change is welcome lest the two principals run out of fresh material to slog through. More importantly, for those new to the series, there doesn’t appear to be a great need to get caught up on the Trip to Italy or Britain (although it does give a little more context to understand Brydon and Coogan’s relationship). A fun diversion for those who have a hankering for impressions of British entertainment royalty, specifically Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Roger Moore, and Mick Jagger, The Trip to Spain is not rated.
